So maybe it's because I'm not a cat, but sitting like this doesn't seem like it'd be comfortable to me, but Kasey certainly seems to enjoy it!
Of course, she also likes to just lie flat on her back too!
Here Virgil prefers to keep himself situated firmly on the ground.

The Duo Turn Two!

Well, yesterday, August 12th was the Duo's 2nd
birthday! I didn't quite throw a party for them, per se, but they did get some extra treats! And also they got some collars as presents. (Ok, so initially they weren't overly excited about the collars, but now they don't mind so much. Kasey is happy with her pretty purple collar and Virgil is happy with his manly blue collar)

Huray! Karl's finally finished up with his exams, then studying, and more exams! So now he has a chance to post some pics!

Here's a picture of the Duo, hard at work sleeping on the floor... it must have been a busy day of watching stuff outside for them...

Kasey got so excited that she thought she was a groundhog!! (I kid you not, she perched herself up on her hind legs like this without any prodding, posing, or coaxing from me!)

Now I'm sure that anybody else who has cats is quite familiar with this routine, but it never fails to amuse me...
It starts with the Duo pacing back and forth "talking up a storm" about how hungry they are... like they haven't had anything to eat in days...

And then, as soon as they get food, they dive into it... but one of the things that I always smile at is when I look at their tails... they are just swaying back and forth so slowly...
such happy cats...

Well, we have had ourselves a very wonderful holiday! Karl went out of town for a couple days over Christmas so we got to visit with Foster Mom & Foster Dad! It was so nice to see them! We had a nice big room to ourselves with a nice window to look out and some great stuff to play with/on!
Of course, we were happy when Karl got back. We showed him how happy we were by constantly keeping his lap warm. Between the two of us, I think his legs may have fallen asleep! For Christmas Foster Mom & Foster Dad got us this little red dot that moves really fast! It only seems to appear whenever Karl is around now, and he seems to get a kick out of watching us try to catch it!

At the Vet!

So yesterday the Duo made the trip out to Cat Care to visit with Dr. Andersen for their annual check-up, rabies shots, and also to get their kitty distemper vaccine.

Once they arrived, they clearly knew that something was up...
They both tried to peer out of their cat carrier to see what was going on...
Little Kasey had her turn on the scale first. She's weighing in at 9lbs 8oz, which is a perfect weight for her.
Then it was Virgil's turn. As Kasey's "big brother" it's appropriate that he's a little bit bigger, at 9lbs, 13oz.
Of course, he wasn't overly excited to get his shot though...
Happily, the trip went just fine and the Duo are in excellent health

Here's a picture of the two of them relaxing on their favorite chair. Usually it's just Kasey in the chair and Virgil will sit on the couch, but sometimes they'll both sit there.

Well, here are a few pictures of Virgil and Kasey having some fun. Virgil absolutely loves to chase twisties around, and it's quite amusing to watch. Kasey enjoys them too, but not as much as chasing bottle caps!

As you can see here, they both like playing with this feather!

Now if you look at their claws, you'll notice that they're blue. I picked up these claw-caps from Pet Smart and figured I'd give them a try. Virgil and Kasey don't seem to mind (although I think Kasey would prefer purple) but it certainly lessens the chance that they'd scratch anything up.

A scare

So back on Labor day, little Kasey gave me quite a scare. So I got up in the morning to go to class and she was just sitting at the foot of the bed. I thought that was odd, but figured maybe she was just sleepy. Well, all morning it was eating at me, so I went home for lunch and saw that she'd hardly moved and that she looked very uncomfortable and was breathing shallowly. At that point I was very concerned and called the emergency vet line. Of course, since it was Labor Day they were the only show in town and were quite full, they said that they had so many animals that they wouldn't be able to see her until 7 that night. So, in a panic, she headed down to Richmond. Once there, they took her in and I instantly felt at least a little better since she was under professional care. After a couple of hours, the vet came out and said that she couldn't tell what was wrong, but that Kasey had a very high fever (about 105.4). So she gave her a subdermal fluid injection, which perked her up a little bit, and back home she went. The next morning, she wasn't doing any better, but at least it was a normal work day, so just after lunch we headed out to Cville Cat Care for a meeting with Dr. Andersen. Kasey's temperature was a little higher (106) and her abdomen was sore to the touch, but X-rays were negative for any problems. They kept her there for the night for observation. The next morning, she wasn't any different, so Dr. Andersen performed exploratory surgery to see if she had any problems or blockages with her intestinal tract. There were no problems, and they sewed her back up. As the docs say, it seemed as though that "released the demons" because her temperature dropped quite a bit after her surgery. Apparently, the dreaded "Fever of Unknown Origins." She stayed there that night and Thursday for further observation, although when I went to visit her on Thursday, she was doing much better. Friday was the happy day as she came home. Although her brother was not amused as she had a very funny "smell" to her (that vet smell). About a week later, she went back to have her staples removed and has continued the road to recovery with her brother glad she is back. The happy ending to this story is that now, about 6 weeks afterwards, she continues to do great and her fur has almost completely grown back in! Along with that, she and Virgil are back to playing together like they were before :-)

Cousins!!

Here are a couple of pictures of our "cousins" In this top picture are a couple of kitties named Brigitte and Moraine that Karl's mom adopted (Karl's sister actually picked them up in Maryland and Karl took them down to South Carolina). That picture's about 6 months old, so they're probably a lot bigger by now.

The big black cat in this picture is Princess. She's a cat that Karl's mom adopted from a foster mom. Apparently before getting found, Princess was living in a dumpster behind a KFC. She's much happier now living with Karl's parents.

Who knows, maybe someday we'll get to meet these kitties!

Well, it is true that we cats do like to sleep a lot... preferably at least 14-15 hours per day at a minimum. Of course, if you had eyelids as heavy as ours and a nice cozy couch, you'd probably sleep that much too!

Well I hope that all of you are having a great 4th of July. Since today we had the successful launch of Discovery, I figured it'd be a good time to provide a link to the kitties namesakes!

Vigil is named after Virgil "Gus" Grissom, one of the original Mercury 7 Astronauts who died when Apollo 1 burned up on the launch pad.

Kasey is named after Kalpana Chawla, "KC" which sounds like Kasey. She was one of the Columbia Astronauts who died when Columbia burned up during re-entry.
